Memorial of St. Francis of Assisi Today

Today is the day that the Catholic Church remembers the death of St. Francis of Assisi. Written accounts tell us that he died on October 3, 1226, a date termed his transitus. By the time of his death, St. Francis had started an entire movement, including religious orders that included clergy, nuns and laity. He accomplished all of this starting from modest beginnings as an inspired renovator of a church. At his death, he was already suffering daily from poor health, especially with discomfort and pain in his failing eyes. In his Canticle of Creatures, St. Francis wrote “Praised be You, my Lord through Sister Death,” and one can imagine that delivery from his failing health situation was some relief for St. Francis. In this same work, St. Francis of Assisi added this memorable line for today:
