One of the most important questions we can ever ask ourselves is whether we are just a random person or a person who is being called to fulfill a purpose, role, or function.
Cause & Effect
I think one way to answer this question is to work with the basic cause and effect law of the universe. You probably already know how that law works:
- Everything is caused by something.
- Everything that happens fulfills the causes making it happen.
- Everything that happens was the only possible thing that could happen given the causes.
- Everything causes something else.
- …and then we can start all over again, back to the top.
We are not exceptions to laws of the universe. We are actually a magnificent fulfillment. If we plug you into the cause and effect law of the universe, we figure out:
- You were not randomly born, you were caused to be born — by the universe, or God or your Higher Power, or however that makes sense to you. Only you.
- You are the living fulfillment of innumerable causes in the universe that combined in a totally unique way in a totally unique time, a way and time that never happened before and will never happen again – to make you. Only you.
- You are the only possible way that the universe and its causes could be fulfilled, no one else could have been born to fulfill the universe, and that’s why there was never anyone like you before, and never will be anyone like you again. Only you.
- Just like the way you were caused by, your whole life is now you being the cause of, like no one else ever before and like no one else ever again. Only you can do what you do and make happen what you make happen. Only you.
- Just as you are living fulfillment of the universe, now you are to be fulfilled — that’s what calling is. That’s your own unique never was never will be again calling. Only you.
You can see that this list is perhaps one of the most important things you can figure out about life. Once you know this list, you can see how things in your life are either lined up to see and respond to what and how you came to be and what you are called to be, or just don’t line up with those things. Then you can start doing more of the things that do line up, and stop wasting your time and energy on the things that don’t and that aren’t really about you after all anyway.
Get Aware
Depending on your relationships and exposure to things like the media, you may experience a lot of messaging all day long that distracts you from seeing and understanding yourself and making choices based on that. Awareness is the key, and the good news is that once awareness of your own being and calling happens, you can use the second key – choice – to start working with that awareness of yourself in better ways. Taking time to improve your awareness and understanding of yourself is a good investment of your time and a very wise thing to do. If you’re not doing it, start doing it.
So what?
Sometimes people want to know why having a calling is important. Why should anyone care? Is there a prize? What if I would rather just live and make choices with how I think and feel at the time?
It’s a very good question. I think of the answer in three parts. Understanding that you have a calling and lining up your life to that calling will give you three things:
- You will be better able to understand why your life is the way that it is.
- You will be better able to know what your life could be.
- You will see yourself as more important, more dignified, and more worthy in a very deep way and on the level of the cosmic (that’s suns, moons, planets, stars…everything).
- You will have a life that is more rich and relationships that are deeper and more fulfilling, because you will start seeing others as also unique, and more important, more dignified, as well as more worthy.
- You will see the things in a way that makes you profoundly happy, in a real way not a passing way or a way that follows up (seemingly) good times with not so great consequences.
Yes, you can decide whether or not you want those things for yourself. You can decide to live intentionally or accidentally every day of all your years. What do you want to do? Do you even know? It is very good to take time to sit down and ask yourself, “What do I want to do? What do I really want?”
Once you figure those things out, then you will know if following your calling and living life with clarity and purpose is the thing to do. You can certainly choose a life of obliviousness, delusion, and ignoring important things about you, hang out with people who do the same, but I’ve never seen it work out well for somebody. Sooner or later the proverbial “crows come home to roost.” Luckily, you don’t have to have that experience before you can wise up and live your life more in line with your calling. And if you’re a person for whom those crows have definitely come home, that’s just a clear invitation from the universe that you’re important and it’s time to get back on track.
You are never a lost cause. Never.
For Today
Take some time today — maybe even take a break today — and think about the cause-and-effect lists that I shared with you. Then notice, what do the lists make you think about? Do you start to think a little differently? What new things come to mind for you? Also notice, how do you feel when you think about the things in those lists? Do you start to feel differently? What new feelings do you start to have? Capture your experience so that you can keep it. You can write in a journal, or draw yourself a picture. It doesn’t need to be fancy, it just needs to work for you. If writing or drawing just aren’t your thing, look around and find an object that you will use to remember your experience of thinking about your calling. Keep it with you.
Most importantly, come back and revisit the lists on a regular basis. That could be monthly, or weekly, or daily — whatever works for you. You can also see if revisiting the lists helps you think and feel better when you are feeling really challenged or feel down about yourself or how your life is going.
